Waynoka, Oklahoma

Question: What is the last thing you would expect to be associated with a caboose. Answer: A gorilla!

After Traci and I passed through Freedom, Oklahoma on our way back home in Oklahoma City, we found a caboose in the town of Waynoka. We were not expecting this one, and only found it because we got detoured by a train–a real, active one.

The train had stopped on the tracks of US 270, so we took a detour south to the next crossing. As we crossed over it, we found an AT&SF caboose on Ash Street, west of Cleveland Street. It was in great shape, and well cared for, but it had no visible number painted on it.

The caboose was behind a fence, and we could not get in the gate. But what really surprised us was–a statue of a gorilla! Yes, a big, huge gorilla. No, I do not know why it was there, what it meant or anything else. I hope to find out some info and contact someone there to get that story–I’m sure it will be a great one!
